In the fall of 2018 my doctor told me that due to my family history of cancer that I was a good candidate for genetic testing. So, I elected to have the test done. After 4 weeks the test results came back and I was told that I was at high risk of getting breast cancer due to a gene mutation.

In January of 2020, I went to the Dr, for him to diagnose me that I had shingles. While I was there I mention about a lump I felt in my breast and armpit and how painful they really hurt. He said it’s probably from the shingles.

I had my first breast biopsy on my 26th birthday and have had annual mammograms ever since.

Hi my name is Annie Mileto and I’m 37 years old. I was diagnosed with DCIS Zero stage breast cancer 2 years ago, it was not found on my routine mammogram instead it was only found because I kept pushing my doctors.

In October 2018 my dad had been told for the second time to go home and get his affairs in order. At this time we went to the cancer center of America. In 2019 we requested a DNA test be done on his cancer to better treat him. He had stage 4 liver cancer. The test came back with the BRCA1 gene. They tested him for all mutation then. Still positive for the BRCA1 gene and another mutation. In July of 2019 I tested positive for both the mutations my dad has.

Most of the time when you hear the six letter word, CANCER, you think that the person is dying and that they are going to have to fight to stay alive. That fight entailing chemotherapy appointments, radiation, surgery, being really sick, losing weight, looking ill, and being tired. All of which are 100% accurate. But what you don’t think about are the unspoken obstacles the cancer patient will face. The unspoken obstacles that are just as hard.

My mother battled breast cancer until the age of 47, and for most of my teenage life I remember every few years having to process the change that came with being excited to be “in remission” only to be surprised that it recurred somewhere else.
