Pink Glam Garba

Event Location:

Royal Palm Beach Cultural Center

Pink Glam Garba is a fundraiser created to enable participants to enjoy beautiful music and traditional Indian dance, called garba, as well as raise awareness of breast cancer in the South Florida Indian (South Asian) community.

Three friends (Jigna Solanki, Niti Chadha & Sonia Patel) who have been touched by breast cancer in some way, were inspired to initiate this unique event. They wanted to share their love for garba and enable the Indian community to unite for a meaningful cause.

Sonia is a 6.5 year breast cancer survivor who was the first in her family to learn that they carried the BRCA+1 mutation, after her diagnosis. Being of Asian-Indian descent & whose parents were from East Africa, breast cancer wasn’t discussed much & was shamed as taboo. Even though others in the family were previously diagnosed with breast cancer, Sonia was the first to openly share her diagnosis and journey to raise awareness and enable others to take preventative measures. Had Sonia known about the BRCA family history, she could have been monitored more regularly and treated this disease much earlier. This has motivated her to raise awareness in the Indian community.

What is garba? Garba is an Indian folk dance, which is usually performed in a circle, community style. “Garba is layered with symbolism of the feminine divine and cyclical nature of life. Garba is a dance that honors, worships, and celebrates the feminine form of divinity. The word “garba” comes from the Sanskrit word garbha, meaning “womb.” Traditionally, the dance is performed by women in a circle around a clay lantern with a light inside, called a garbha deep (“womb lamp”).” – excerpted from www.artidea.org

Proceeds from this garba/event will go to BRCAStrong.  BRCAStrong is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization aimed at supporting women who have been affected by breast cancer and gynecological cancers regardless of predisposition to a hereditary cancer. Financial support to routine monitoring or preventative surgery for Previvors, Thrivers, and Survivors throughout the journey towards health, positive self-image, and inspired living.

Over the years, BRCAStrong has evolved into a sisterhood of Previvors, Thrivers and Survivors that offers education, information, support, and advocacy for women who are uninsured or underinsured. Support comes in all forms from premastectomy care packages to post-mastectomy garments, gynecological care packages and other treatment necessities; and is provided at zero cost to recipients.
